ROEN - Radio-Observatorio Espacial do Nordeste

Program Description: The Rádio-Observatório Espacial do Nordeste ( ROEN ) part of the international geodetic Very Long Baseline Interferometry networks and contributing to the IERS (International Earth Rotation Service), supporting Brazilian programs of geodesy, cartography and spatial navigation by making use of techniques such as GPS surveys and Right Time Services. The system consists of a large antenna 14.2 meters in diameter, equipped with the most modern and sophisticated instrumentation. The technology is radio-astronomical. Quasars, located billions of light-years away, are sources of radio reference. With two or more radio telescopes simultaneously observing a network, the interference of radio waves is obtained. Observation of these objects by several radio telescopes of a network of thousands of kilometers allows the determination of absolute positions on Earth's surface with an accuracy of less than one inch.

Organization Description: Collaborators include the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) (today Geoscience Laboratory, National Ocean Services), part of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (EPUSP) with the participation of the Center of Radio-astronomy and Space (CRAAE, agreement gathering Mackenzie, INPE, USP and Unicamp).

Data Description: Varying network needs including small file transfer, occasional large file transfer, daily large file transfer and grid computing (machine to machine) at speeds ranging from 100 Mpbs to 1 Gbps.
