Program Description: The NSF office of Polar programs manages several programs at the South Pole, including Photon Astrophysics , Particle Astrophysics, Lower Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology, Upper Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, Glaciology and Antarctic System Science , Antarctic Earth Sciences, Antarctic Ocean Sciences and Antarctic Organism and Ecosystem. The largest data users are resident at the South Pole. NSF has several vessels in its fleet that support research and logistics in the oceans around Antarctica. The ARSV Laurence M. Gould23 and RVIB Nathaniel B. Palmer24 are two good examples. Both accept science research proposals as part of their seasonal scheduling in various locations and ports of call.

Organization Description: On 10 May 2013, President Barack Obama signed the National Strategy for the Arctic Region. The United States joined our Arctic Council colleagues Canada, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Russia, and Sweden in articulating our strategic priorities for this critical region of the world

Data Description: Maritime users hope to find an effective solution that meets their needs out at sea as well when in port in lower latitudes like Lyttleton at degrees south latitude and Punta Arena at 53 degrees south latitude.. Requirements specified are 110GB/day for bulk data transfer (10GB) plus data from unmanned underwater and aerial vehicles. Future transfer requirements call for 1310 GB/day unidirectional to the US and 11Mbps bi-directional for real time data. There is a desire to move towards real time data retrieval rather than store and forward or store and recovery once a season. Maritime requirements include some challenging bulk data transfers and data rates. To meet these requirements will stress the system and may be cost drivers.
