Program Description: The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) will construct a networked infrastructure of science-driven sensor systems to measure the physical, chemical, geological and biological variables in the ocean and seafloor. Greater knowledge of these variables is vital for improved detection and forecasting of environmental changes and their effects on biodiversity, coastal ecosystems and climate. This NSF funded program is transitioning ocean observation from ship-based expeditions to permanent sensor presence.
Year Started: 2018.
Organization Description: The program is managed and coordinated by the OOI Project Office at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership.
Data Description: Network requirements include shipboard communications and parters at the University of the South Pacific (networking in underdeveloped areas).
Project Type: Observatory
Project Domains: Geosciences
Budget: 200+ Million US
Federal Funding: NSF
