Program Description: EISCAT, the European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association, is established to conduct research on the lower, middle and upper atmosphere and ionosphere using the incoherent scatter radar technique. The experimental sites of EISCAT are located in the Scandinavian sector, north of the Arctic Circle. In 2008, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures selected EISCAT 3D for its "Roadmap 2008 for Large-Scale European Research Infrastructures for the next 20–30 years." Production on a modular basis will begin in 2015 and some of the arrays will be extremely large with over 30,000 individual antenna elements.
