EISCAT - European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association

https://www.eiscat.se

Program Description: EISCAT, the European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association, is established to conduct research on the lower, middle and upper atmosphere and ionosphere using the incoherent scatter radar technique. The experimental sites of EISCAT are located in the Scandinavian sector, north of the Arctic Circle. In 2008, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures selected EISCAT 3D for its "Roadmap 2008 for Large-Scale European Research Infrastructures for the next 20–30 years." Production on a modular basis will begin in 2015 and some of the arrays will be extremely large with over 30,000 individual antenna elements.

Year Started: 1975.

Organization Description: ISCAT is funded and operated by research institutes and research councils of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Japan, China, the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

Data Description: The basic data measured with the incoherent scatter radar technique are profiles of electron density, electron and ion temperature, and ion velocity. Subsequent processing allows a wealth of further parameters, describing the ionosphere and neutral atmosphere, to be derived. A
