Program Description: C4 Rice is a project of the International Rice Research Institute. IRRI aims to reduce poverty and hunger, improve the health of rice farmers and consumers, and ensure environmental sustainability of rice farming. The program is a collaborative research partnership strengthening the national agricultural research and extension systems of participating countries. The C4 Project is a global alliance of multidisciplinary partners from advanced institutions organized to convert the photosynthetic system in rice to the more efficient, supercharged C4 one used by maize; this would increase rice yields while using scarce resources (land, water, fertilizer) more effectively.
